Keynote: College, Mental Health Issues, and Creating a Culture of Learning

Mental health among college students represents a significant area of concern in general, one of the last mutable factors affecting retention, and one of the least understood aspects of stigma among even well-informed faculty. This presentation address each of these issues and one effort to make college and universities "safe and stigma free zones". Based on the initial efforts of actor Glenn Close and her organization, Bring Change to Mind, Indiana University developed, carried out and assessed a national pilot for a "deep touch", student led project, U(University) Bring Change to Mind. UBC2M is based on principles from scientific research on stigma, cultural change, and higher education and employed rigorous approaches to determining effectiveness. The principles, the components, the assessment, the "tool box" and the plan for national dissemination will all be considered in our discussion.
