2021 Featuring Tambra Jackson

2021 Plater Institute on the Future of Learning

Fostering Antiracism in the Classroom

The 2021 Plater Institute on the Future of Learning was held virtually on Friday, April 9, from 10 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

In fall 2020, IUPUI Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion promoted campus-wide reading groups to discuss Ibram X. Kendi’s How to be an Antiracist. Building on this momentum and institutional priority, this year’s Plater Institute aims to create conversations around fostering antiracism in the classroom and provide instructors with strategies to implement antiracist pedagogies in various learning environments.

The purpose of the institute is to:

  1. Raise awareness about the need for antiracist policies and pedagogies in the university community.
  2. Provide strategies and resources on how to create, implement, and assess antiracist classroom environments.
  3. Showcase examples of campus projects and programs and examples of instructor work that address antiracism in the classroom.

The institute is sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs, Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Critical Consciousness Required: Toward Decolonizing and Emancipatory Frameworks for Anti-Racist Curriculum

The connectedness of pedagogy and curriculum is sometimes overlooked in intuitional goals of anti-racist curriculum efforts.  The development of critical consciousness is an important part of pedagogical practices necessary for implementing and sustaining anti-racist curriculum. This presentation explores the ways in which building critical consciousness is fundamental for instructors, administrators, and leaders who want to implement social justice and anti-racist curriculum.
