Interculturality and Inclusivity: Pedagogies that Dig Deep
The 2022 Plater Institute on the Future of Learning will be held virtually on Thursday, April 21, 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
In 2020-2021, schools/units across IUPUI built on the campus’s unyielding commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion by developing diversity strategic plans which they are currently implementing. The diversity strategic plans are based on Dr. Daryl G. Smith's Diversity Framework. The IUPUI Forum Council is also dedicating the entire 2021-2022 year to building more equitable and inclusive learning environments at IUPUI. This year's theme is intended to support this work and to promote an inclusive, global, and equitable campus.
Interculturality refers to the existence and equitable interaction of diverse cultures and the possibility of generating shared cultural expressions through dialogue and mutual respect” (UNESCO).
Inclusion refers to the extent to which individuals feel valued, welcomed, respected, and supported to participate fully in a given setting (IUPUI Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion’s Diversity Planning Resource Guide).
Pedagogies that Dig Deep help learners and educators recognize how their own biases and positions define their approaches to learning and how they see the world. Pedagogies that Dig Deep recognize that teaching and learning is about power and critical self-reflection, and even discomfort, as much as it is about skills and content.
